Michigan Advocacy Progam

Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP) provides free legal representation to farmworkers and their family members through its statewide division, Farmworker Legal Services (FLS), and its partnership with the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC). FLS and MIRC represent farmworkers in cases related to their migrant, seasonal, or temporary agricultural employment, for example cases involving wage theft, recruitment fees, unsafe housing or working conditions, immigration, or access to services.

About the Organization

What is now the Michigan Advocacy Program began 50 years ago as a number of independent local legal aid societies in Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Jackson, and Lansing. Over time, these local programs merged and became Legal Services of South Central Michigan — which provides free civil legal aid to low income individuals in 13 counties in south and central Michigan and has offices in Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Jackson, Lansing and Monroe. LSSCM is the Legal Services Corporation and the Michigan State Bar Foundation grantee across all of these 13 counties.

$600 Relief Payment - Farm and Food Worker Relief Program

The Farm and Food Worker Relief (FFWR) Grant Program is an initiative by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) aimed at providing financial support to eligible farm and food workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a one-time relief payment of $600, the program assists workers in covering expenses incurred in preparing for, preventing exposure to, and responding to the pandemic. Administered by selected nonprofit organizations and a Tribal entity, the program disbursed approximately $670 million from the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 to aid workers who were on the frontlines in the agricultural sector, ensuring the nation's food supply chain remained intact amidst the pandemic's challenges. Eligible workers can apply for this relief through designated local organizations, providing a much-needed financial reprieve during these trying times.
